A BNP activist died in a factional clash during a victory march at Meherpur’s Gangni upazila on Tuesday, after a furore erupted over the presence of another activist having deep links with the ousted Awami League.
Naharul Islam, 55, died and 10 others were injured in the clash in Baot village.
According to eyewitnesses, BNP leaders and activists in the Baot village brought out a victory procession on Tuesday morning to celebrate the end to 15-year authoritarian rule of Awami League, with the relatives of Naharul also joining.
EnamulHaq, Naharul’s brother, was also present in the march, even though he had been involved with Awami League for past 10 years, and remained an influential leader of the ousted party. Enamul was also the director of a local school.
BNP activist Uzzal Hossain became furious after seeing Enamul in the march, leading to a scuffle and finally full-scale confrontation between two factions.
Locals rushed the injured to a local clinic, but Nasrul was moved to Kushtia Medical College, as his deteriorating health condition required advanced medical intervention.
Naharul died along the way. Notably, police did not reach the spot when they were informed about the death.
