A large quantity of firearms and ammunition was recovered during an operation conducted by the Coast Guard West Zone in the Sundarbans.
Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon disclosed the information in a press release on Thursday, October 8.
According to Lieutenant Commander Shawkat Ahmed, Staff Officer (Operations) of Coast Guard West Zone, they received intelligence that a gang of robbers was staying near the Shela River Forest Office area under Mongla Police Station in Bagerhat district, planning to carry out a robbery.
Acting on the information, Coast Guard Base Mongla conducted a special operation in the area at around 8pm on October 7. Sensing the presence of the Coast Guard, members of the gang fled deep into the Sundarbans. As a result, none of them could be arrested or identified.
Later, Coast Guard personnel searched the area and recovered six single-barrel guns, three air guns, one pipe-gun trigger and 14 rounds of live ammunition, which had been concealed in an unusual manner.
Legal proceedings regarding the recovered arms and ammunition are underway.
Lieutenant Commander Shawkat Ahmed further said they were hopeful that the Sundarbans could be made completely free of robbers through coordinated efforts by the Coast Guard West Zone and other law-enforcement agencies.
