Khulna: Following a violent mugging attack on a police inspector returning from a special operation, the Khulna District Police has imposed a restriction prohibiting police officers from moving around alone at night. Amid growing concerns over continuous attacks on law enforcement personnel, unit heads have been issued strict directives to ensure the safety and security of officers during special operations and official duties.
The directive was issued on Friday night (October 9) through an official letter signed by the Superintendent of Police (SP) of the District Special Branch (DSB).
According to the directive, special operations are currently underway in Rupsa, Terokhada, Dighalia, and Batiaghata upazila areas due to the ongoing security situation. Taking recent attacks on law enforcement personnel into consideration, unit heads must ensure that no police officer travels alone at night during operations or while carrying out other duties, and necessary security measures must be implemented accordingly.
Copies of the directive have been dispatched to various police units and relevant offices, including the Additional Superintendents of Police (Administration & Finance, Crime & Operations, DSB, and Traffic), Circle Assistant Superintendents of Police, the District Intelligence Branch (DB), Traffic Department, Police Lines, Reserve Office, and Court Police Inspector. The respective police stations and offices across the district have also been brought under this purview.
Khulna Superintendent of Police Sarkar Omar Faruk stated that late Thursday night, a police inspector was seriously injured by sharp weapons wielded by muggers while returning from a special operation under Rupsa police station. At the time of the incident, the officer was wearing plain clothes. Following this incident, solo movement at night has been restricted to safeguard district police personnel.
According to police sources, around 2:30 AM on Thursday, 43-year-old Police Inspector Shah Alam was attacked in front of Khulna Collegiate School on Khan Jahan Ali Road in the city. Severely injured by the muggers' machete blows, he was initially rescued and given first aid before being transferred to the Rajarbagh Central Police Lines Hospital in Dhaka for advanced medical treatment.
