How to access Starlink’s satellite mobile service on your phone

Mobile users may soon be able to stay connected even beyond the reach of conventional cellular towers, as satellite-based mobile connectivity opens up new possibilities for communication in remote areas, coastal regions and at sea. Banglalink subscribers are being offered access to Starlink-based satellite mobile services, although availability depends on handset compatibility, network coverage and the operator’s service conditions.
The service does not require a separate satellite phone, dish, antenna or other specialised equipment. Eligible users can access it with a compatible 4G smartphone and a Banglalink SIM, provided the service is available and enabled for their numbers.
Is a separate app required?
No separate app is required to establish a satellite connection through direct-to-cell technology. Users may check the MyBL app for information about the service, eligibility and activation instructions, if available.
Keeping the phone’s software and network settings up to date is also advisable. Users should ensure that 4G connectivity is supported and enabled on their handsets. However, having a 4G phone alone does not guarantee access to satellite connectivity.
When does the phone connect to a satellite?
When a compatible handset moves beyond the coverage of conventional mobile towers, it may attempt to connect to an available satellite network, depending on the service configuration and operating conditions.
An unobstructed view of the sky can improve the chances of establishing a connection, as buildings, mountains and other physical obstacles may interfere with the satellite signal.
However, satellite connectivity is not guaranteed whenever a phone loses terrestrial network coverage. The availability of the service depends on several factors, including handset compatibility, location, satellite coverage and the mobile operator’s service arrangements.
No additional charge during the first month
Banglalink has announced that satellite internet access will be offered free of charge during the first month with eligible internet or mixed bundle packages.
From the second month onwards, subscribers are expected to receive satellite connectivity without an additional charge alongside specified monthly internet and mixed bundle packages. The operator has also announced five free SMS messages per month for use over the satellite network.
Subscribers should check Banglalink’s latest package terms and eligibility requirements to confirm which bundles qualify and whether any other conditions apply.
What can users do with the service?
The primary purpose of satellite-to-mobile connectivity is to extend basic communication beyond the reach of conventional cellular networks. It could prove particularly useful in remote areas, coastal communities, at sea and during emergencies or natural disasters.
Depending on the supported features and available bandwidth, users may be able to access selected applications, messaging services and location-based functions.
However, the service should not be considered a substitute for conventional high-speed 4G or 5G mobile broadband. Its performance and supported applications may be limited by satellite capacity, signal conditions and the specific services enabled by the operator.
No satellite dish or external antenna needed
Unlike conventional satellite internet services, which generally require a dedicated dish or antenna installed at a fixed location, direct-to-cell technology enables compatible mobile phones to communicate directly with satellites.
This means users do not need to install additional equipment at home or in the office. The technology is designed to extend connectivity to ordinary mobile devices, subject to the technical and service requirements of the satellite and mobile network operators.
Will subscribers of other operators get the service?
At present, the service has been introduced for Banglalink subscribers in Bangladesh, according to the information provided by the operator. There is no confirmed information establishing whether customers of other mobile operators can access the same facility.
A compatible 4G handset alone is therefore insufficient. Users must also have an eligible Banglalink SIM and a number for which the satellite service is available.
What should users do if the connection fails?
If satellite connectivity does not work despite having a 4G-compatible phone, users should first check whether their handset supports the service and whether its software and network settings are up to date.
They can then consult the MyBL app, if service information is available there, to check eligibility and activation requirements. If the problem persists, contacting Banglalink customer care is the best way to confirm whether the number qualifies and whether satellite coverage is available at the user's location.
As satellite-to-mobile services depend on device compatibility, network availability and operator-specific conditions, subscribers should verify the latest requirements before assuming that their phones will automatically connect whenever conventional mobile coverage disappears.
