A flash flood in Nepal’s central Gorkha district has swept away nearly two dozen houses and four bridges, damaged a hydropower project and left five people missing, while the army has rescued 49 people from affected areas.
The flood struck along the Budhi Gandaki River, with a landslide upstream believed to have triggered the sudden surge of water. A camp at a hydropower project along the river was also swept away.
The district’s top official confirmed that five people remained missing on Sunday, while the army said it had rescued 49 people from flood-hit areas.
The disaster comes as Nepal continues to recover from devastating floods and landslides that struck border towns near Tibet two months ago. That disaster destroyed thousands of homes, damaged critical energy infrastructure and left thousands of people dead or missing.
