A Dhaka court on Sunday denied bail to Gazi Nazrul Islam, Member of Parliament for the Satkhira-4 constituency, in a case filed over abetting the suicide of his second wife, Mariam Khatun.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Al-Biruni Mir rejected the bail petition following a hearing on Sunday, October 11. Public Prosecutor Samsuddoha Sumon confirmed the court's decision.

During the hearing, defense counsel Mahbubur Rahman sought bail for the lawmaker on the condition of a mutual compromise. However, the prosecution strongly opposed the plea.

Earlier on September 20, police recovered the hanging body of 19-year-old Mariam Khatun from MP Gazi Nazrul’s residence in the NAM Building in the capital. Following the incident, Mariam’s father, Md. Masum Billah, filed a case naming Gazi Nazrul, his first wife Maksuda Begum, and brother-in-law Obaidur Rahman as accused.

Following their arrest, a court on September 21 granted a four-day remand for Gazi Nazrul and a one-day remand for Maksuda Begum. Maksuda was sent to prison on September 22 upon completion of her remand, while Obaidur Rahman was arrested and sent to jail on September 23.

On September 24, following his initial four-day remand, Gazi Nazrul was placed on a fresh four-day remand for further interrogation. Meanwhile, a Dhaka court granted bail to Maksuda Begum on September 30.
