Two bus drivers were killed and 10 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses on the Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj highway in the Kamarpara-Abhaya area of Godagari upazila on Saturday night.
The deceased drivers were identified as Ratan Sutradhar from Bholahat upazila of Chapainawabganj and Asadul Haque from Belkuchi of Sirajganj.
Abdul Matin, officer-in-charge of Godagari Police Station, confirmed the matter.
He said a bus of Madina Travels, heading towards Rajshahi from Chapainawabganj at about 11:00pm, collided with a Hanif Paribahan bus traveling from Dhaka to Chapainawabganj.
The collision occurred when the Madina Travels bus attempted to overtake a truck at high speed, resulting in a head-on impact with the Hanif Paribahan bus.
Both buses were severely damaged, said OC Abdul Matin.
Emergency services arrived promptly to rescue the injured and transported them to Godagari 31-bed Hospital and Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Police recovered the bodies of the deceased and sent them to morgue for post-mortem examinations.
The accident caused a significant traffic jam, stretching approximately 10 kilometers on both sides of the highway. The situation was finally brought under control after the two buses were removed from the road, according to the OC.
Authorities are investigating the incident further to determine the exact cause of the accident.
