No plan for drive like Operation Clean Heart: Home Minister Collected Image

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Wednesday that the government was making all-out efforts to curb crime, but had no plan to launch a drive like Operation Clean Heart.

The minister made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists after inaugurating the Cyber Police Centre and Digital Forensic Lab of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the Chattogram Metropolitan Police Lines in Dampara in the afternoon.

“Police officers sometimes come under attack while trying to prevent crime. This is nothing new. We will make every possible effort to bring criminals under control,” the minister said.

“If anyone helps an accused person evade arrest when police attempt to detain them, we will take appropriate legal action. If you provide us with information, we will continue our efforts. We have no plan for a drive like Operation Clean Heart,” he added.

Highlighting the importance of digital forensic examinations in expediting the judicial process, Salahuddin said various forms of analysis, evidence and their authentication were necessary to ensure that people received justice without delay.

He said the Cyber Police Centre and Digital Forensic Lab had been established in Chattogram, following a similar facility in Dhaka, to strengthen Bangladesh Police's capacity to use digital technology and tackle related crimes.

The project is being implemented with support from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), he added.

“Crime patterns have changed worldwide. Criminals are using digital platforms to commit offences such as phishing, blackmail, online harassment and fraud, posing security risks to individuals, institutions and government agencies,” he stated.

He said the government was working to strengthen its capacity to tackle technology-based crimes. “As part of the initiative, the government plans to establish digital forensic laboratories at divisional, district and upazila levels across the country,” the minister noted.

He added that different police units would work together in digital forensic analysis and examinations. As all the units fall under the same ministry, interdepartmental coordination would be ensured.
