The activities of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her team from India are the “principal challenge” to planning Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to India, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir has said.
“Sheikh Hasina and her team are stationed in Delhi and they are trying to destabilise a foreign country sitting in Delhi. This does not benefit India either,” he told The Hindu on the sidelines of the Bay of Bengal Conversation in Dhaka in an interview published yesterday.
“We are seeing some positive signs as India is trying to restrain them. That is the norm between two countries. If they (Hasina and her team) are restrained, then there will be no problem in the relationship,” Humaiun Kobir said.
The state minister said Hasina killed around 2,000 Bangladeshis during the crackdown on the July Uprising and described her as a “terrorist”. He said Bangladesh needed a “clean break” from the past after the sacrifices made to overthrow Hasina, who ruled for more than 15 years.
Humaiun Kobir said Tarique Rahman’s India visit would take place at a “conducive time” and expressed hope that it would happen, stressing that the prime minister had never ruled it out.
He said ties with India remained a priority for Dhaka and described the Awami League leadership as a “hindrance” to normalising bilateral relations.
Humaiun Kobir also said Bangladesh was ready to discuss all issues with India but expected “reciprocation”, adding that Dhaka would not allow anyone to work against India’s interests from Bangladesh and expected India to take similar action.
