Police have detained a 28-year-old man for allegedly luring his former wife to a railway track in Gazipur and killing her by slitting her throat and hacking her with a sharp weapon.
The incident took place on the Dhaka–Joydebpur railway line at Maurartek in the Haidarabad area of Pubail on Sunday afternoon, said Pubail Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atikur Rahman.
The victim, Asma Akter, 18, was the daughter of Abul Hossain of Mounam area under Manda upazila in Naogaon district. She lived with her parents in a rented house in Khailkoir area of Gazipur city and attended a local madrasa.
The detained man, Rafiqul Islam, 28, is the son of the late Siraj Mondal of Danga village in Manda upazila of Naogaon. He had been working in Malaysia and returned to Bangladesh on September 26.
According to the victim's father, Asma married Rafiqul about three and a half years ago through a mobile phone arrangement while he was living in Malaysia. He alleged that Asma's maternal grandfather had forced her into the marriage.
After Rafiqul returned to Bangladesh, the couple developed family disputes. Asma divorced him about 20 days ago, her father said.
Three days before the incident, Rafiqul went to Asma's parental home with several people to take her back, but she refused to go with him, Abul Hossain said.
On Sunday afternoon, Rafiqul allegedly called Asma on her mobile phone and asked her to meet him near the railway tracks in Haidarabad. When she arrived, he allegedly attacked her with a sharp weapon, slitting her throat and inflicting multiple injuries on her body.
Local people rescued Asma in critical condition and took her to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead, police said.
OC Atikur Rahman said local residents detained Rafiqul and handed him over to police. As the incident occurred within the railway jurisdiction, he was later transferred to the Tongi Railway Police Outpost for legal proceedings.
Sub-Inspector Nur Alam of the Tongi Railway Police Outpost said Rafiqul had been detained and the victim's body was sent for autopsy.
Police are investigating the motive behind the killing, he said, adding that the victim's father had filed a case over the incident.
