A little spiderhunter hovers beside a cluster of pinkish-white flowers, its wings spread wide as its long, curved bill probes for nectar in Chattogram’s Fatikchhari. Native to South and Southeast Asia, including Bangladesh, this member of the sunbird family inhabits tropical forests, forest edges and plantations. Despite its name, it feeds not only on spiders but also on other insects and nectar. Its slender, downward-curved bill allows it to probe deep into flowers, pollinating them as it feeds. Classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, the species remains widespread, although deforestation and habitat loss threaten its populations.
