A Dhaka court has placed Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dwip, a friend of former Air Force officer KM Tahsif Souri, on a four-day remand in a murder case filed over the recovery of Tahsif’s body from the Turag River.
The court passed the order on Saturday after police sought a seven-day remand for Dwip, 23, following his arrest in the case filed with Uttarkhan Police Station.
According to the remand petition, police sought his custody to establish the circumstances surrounding Tahsif’s death, identify and arrest other suspects, and recover evidence related to the killing.
The petition stated that Dwip allegedly called Tahsif on the evening of 27 October and took him outside.
The following day, around 4:30pm, police received a call through the national emergency hotline 999 reporting that an unidentified body was floating in the Turag River near Rajabari Ghat in Uttarkhan.
Police identified the body during preparation of the inquest report using an iPhone found in the pocket of the deceased’s trousers. The victim was identified as former Air Force Flight Lieutenant KM Tahsif Souri.
Investigators later found, through information technology and intelligence sources, that Dwip had accompanied Tahsif to the Mazar Basti area under Tongi West Police Station, the remand petition said.
During preliminary questioning, Dwip identified Tahsif as his senior and elder brother. However, investigators suspect his involvement in the killing based on information and evidence gathered so far.
Police said Dwip needed to be interrogated to establish the motive and circumstances of the murder, identify and arrest other suspects, recover evidence and the motorcycle used by Tahsif, and determine the location where the killing took place.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Uttara Division) Md Rezaul Karim said the case was filed over allegations that Tahsif was murdered and his body dumped in the river to conceal the crime.
Tahsif’s father filed the case against unidentified assailants under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of the Penal Code, relating to murder, causing disappearance of evidence and common intention.
