A Dhaka court has rejected the bail application of Satkhira-4 lawmaker GM Nazrul Islam in a case filed over allegations of abetting the suicide of his second wife, Mariam.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir passed the order after a hearing today (1 November).

The lawmaker’s lawyers, including Mahbubur Rahman and Mizanur Rahman, sought bail on his behalf, while the prosecution opposed the application. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court rejected the plea.
In the bail application, the defence claimed that the lawmaker was innocent and had no involvement in the incident described in the case statement.

It argued that he had been implicated solely to harass him.

The application also stated that the 75-year-old politician and freedom fighter suffers from a complex heart condition.

It further argued that he has a permanent address and would neither go into hiding nor leave the area if granted bail.

The defence also cited the bail granted to the lawmaker’s first wife, Maksuda Islam, on 30 September, arguing that he was entitled to similar relief.

Earlier, on 20 September, police recovered the hanging body of Mariam from a flat in the NAM residential complex opposite parliament.

Later that night, police took lawmaker Nazrul and his first wife, Maksuda Islam, into custody.

Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, subsequently filed a case accusing the lawmaker, his first wife and the deceased’s maternal uncle, Obaidur Rahman, of abetting her suicide.

The following day, a court granted four days of remand for Nazrul and one day for Maksuda Begum following a plea by Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station Sub-Inspector Md Shamsuzzohha Sarkar.

That night, the investigation was transferred to the Detective Branch of the police.

On 23 September, Obaidur Rahman, who had been arrested in connection with the case, was sent to jail.
