Metro services have been bypassing Mirpur-11 station since 10:22am on Tuesday after authorities temporarily closed it amid garment workers’ protests over demands for higher wages and benefits in the area.

All gates at the station have also been shut, according to an incident report by MRT Police Inspector (Operations) Md Mohsin Sheikh.

The police officer confirmed that protests were taking place in the Mirpur-11 area, prompting the authorities to suspend operations at the station.

The station remained closed and metro trains continued to bypass it until 11:20am, when this report was filed.

According to witnesses, garment workers took to the streets in the Mirpur-11 area in the morning. At one stage, clashes involving chases and counter-chases between protesters and police created tension in the area.

The protests over demands for a higher minimum wage entered their third consecutive day on Tuesday.
