A Dhaka court on Thursday sent The Daily Observer Editor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury to jail in a murder case linked to the July 2024 mass uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana passed the order when Sub-inspector of Jatrabari Police Station Amir Hossain, also the investigating officer of the case, produced him before the court with a petition to keep him in jail.

Earlier on Wednesday, detectives took Iqbal Sobhan, also the former chairman of DBC News and former information adviser to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, into custody from the private TV channel’s office at Mohakhali.

DBC News Special Correspondent Rajib Ghosh was also taken into custody for questioning following an “unwanted situation” at its office, police said.

Later, Iqbal Sobhan was shown arrested in the Madrasah student Arif killing case filed with Jatrabari Police Station, while Rajib was released on bond.

According to the case statement, police and members of the Awami League, whose activities are now banned, opened fire on the protesters at Kutubkhali in Jatrabari on July 19, 2024.

Arif, a first-year student of Lord Harding Fazil Madrasah, suffered bullet wounds to his eye.

He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Victim’s father Yusuf filed a murder case against 233 people, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on August 25, 2024.

Iqbal Sobhan was the No. 53 accused in the case.
