The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has issued a stern reminder to motorcycle riders and other motor vehicle drivers, warning that driving on roads without an original driving licence is a punishable offence.
The BRTA shared the message on its official Facebook page on Friday (November 6).
According to the notice, holders of learner driving licences are permitted to drive only during training sessions and in the presence of a qualified driving instructor. A prominent red letter ‘L’ must also be displayed at a visible location on the vehicle, the authority said.
Under the relevant motor vehicle regulations, learner drivers must display a large red ‘L’ sign — the abbreviation for ‘Learner’ — at clearly visible positions on both the front and rear of their vehicles while driving on public roads.
The requirement is intended to alert other road users that the vehicle is being driven by an inexperienced driver, enabling them to maintain a safe distance and exercise additional caution to prevent accidents.
The BRTA reiterated that a learner licence does not authorise its holder to drive independently without complying with the prescribed training conditions.
