A mobile court in Barguna destroyed seven charcoal kilns in Azgar Kathi area of the district’s Sadar upazila on Thursday.

Executive Magistrate Abdullah Al Mamun, who led the mobile court team, today said the mobile court conducted the operation around 6:00pm yesterday after learning about the illegal charcoal kilns in Azgar Kathi area.

During the drive, seven kilns were destroyed with the support of police and fire service men as they were being operated by burning wood, which posed health risks to local residents due to the smoke, he said.

However, no arrests or fines were made as those involved in the illegal activities managed to flee before the operation team arrived.

Locals said the illegal practice had been ongoing for a long time, causing severe air pollution and health hazards.

The magistrate assured that strict measures would be taken to prevent the recurrence of such activities in the area.
