Police in Pabna have submitted a charge sheet against 136 leaders and activists of Awami League (AL) in connection with the killings during last year’s uprising.
On Wednesday, Inspector (Operations) of Pabna Sadar Police Station and the investigating officer of the case, Sanjay Kumar Saha, confirmed he submitted the charge sheet to the trial court the previous night.
According to him, so far, 35 individuals have been arrested in connection with the case. The remaining accused is currently at large.
The prime accused is Abu Saeed, organizational secretary of Awami League in Pabna Sadar Upazila and a former Union Parishad chairman. Former AL lawmaker of Sadar constituency Golam Faruk Prince is also among the accused.
Public prosecutor of Pabna District Judge Court, Advocate Golam Sarwar Khan Jewel, said that he was informed by the investigating officer over the phone about the charge sheet submission, though he had not yet received a copy.
The First Information Report (FIR) listed 103 individuals as accused. During the investigation, 34 more individuals were added, bringing the total to 136.
On 4 August 2024, an attack and shooting took place near the traffic square in Pabna town. According to allegations, Abu Saeed, along with Awami League and affiliated organization leaders and activists, carried out the attack.
As a result, Zahidul Islam, 18, a student of Pabna Polytechnic Institute, and Mahbub Hossain Niloy, 16, a ninth-grader at Siddiq Memorial School, were killed.
On 10 August, Dulal Uddin, father of the deceased student Zahidul Islam, filed a case at Pabna Sadar Police Station.
