Bangladesh Workers Party President and former minister Rashed Khan Menon, former Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, former Dhaka North Mayor Atiqul Islam and former State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak have been shown arrested in the case filed over the murder of Md Shahjahan during an anti-discrimination protest in Dhaka’s Banani area.

On Wednesday (October 8), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadekur Rahman granted police’s request to show the four arrested in the case. The accused were produced in court from jail under heavy security, wearing helmets and bulletproof vests.

Additional Public Prosecutor Mohammad Shamsuddoha Suman confirmed the development.

According to the case statement, on July 19 last year, factory worker Shahjahan joined a peaceful procession under the Mohakhali flyover as part of the anti-discrimination movement. Awami League leaders and activists allegedly opened fire on the rally, leaving Shahjahan critically injured. He died four days later while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Shahjahan’s mother, Sajeda, filed a murder case with Banani Police Station on December 18, naming 97 accused.
