Ullapara Correspondent:

BNP Standing Committee member and former Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) vice-president Aman Ullah Aman has vowed that the sacrifice of Nazir Uddin Jehad, a national hero of the 1990 anti-autocracy uprising, will not go in vain.

“We swore that day, touching Jehad’s bloodstained body, that his sacrifice would not be allowed to go in vain. Shaheed Jehad shed his blood in the struggle to establish democracy. Even after democracy was restored, it faced repeated setbacks over the past 17 years,” he said.

Aman made the remarks while talking to journalists after paying his respects at Jehad’s grave in Nabagram area of Ullapara upazila in Sirajganj on Monday (October 12).

He said Bangladesh was progressing in various sectors and moving forward with dignity, but conspiracies had begun to emerge.

“Those who have remained hidden, including covert and fascist forces, are trying to create anarchy. But the people of Bangladesh have established their voting rights through bloodshed. Those rights will never be allowed to be taken away again,” he said.

Aman further said the people must protect the democracy they had regained and would not tolerate any conspiracy against it. He added that BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman was working to establish democracy in the country.

The BNP leader said the people had once again been compelled to take to the streets to restore democratic rights. Tarique Rahman had led the movement from London, helping it evolve into a one-point demand, he added.

Referring to enforced disappearances and casualties during the struggle, Aman said BNP leader Elias Ali and Sumon, among others, had disappeared, while thousands of students and members of the public had been killed.

He also recalled those who lost their lives during the July-August mass uprising of 2024, including Abu Sayed. According to Aman, an election was held following the sacrifices of those who took part in the movement, and the people subsequently chose Tarique Rahman.

BNP leaders Nazim Uddin Alam, Member of Parliament Mustafizur Rahman Babul, Khandaker Lutfor Rahman and other local and central leaders attended the grave-visiting programme.

During the visit, the participants paid tribute to Nazir Uddin Jehad and Saifuddin Moni, who were killed during the 1990 mass uprising against autocratic rule.
