A Dhaka court has sentenced Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, son of former Public Service Commission (PSC) driver Syed Abed Ali Jibon, to four years of rigorous imprisonment for acquiring assets beyond his known sources of income.
Judge BM Tariqul Kabir of the Dhaka Divisional Special Judge’s Court delivered the verdict on Thursday (October 15). Court bench assistant Ariful Islam confirmed the judgment.
On September 30, the court fixed October 15 for the verdict after the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the defence concluded their arguments.
The court recorded testimony from 11 witnesses in the case, with the process concluding on September 13. On September 24, Siam pleaded not guilty during his examination under Section 342 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and sought justice. The court had ordered the framing of charges against him on June 17, paving the way for his trial.
According to the case documents, ACC Assistant Director Zakir Hossain filed the case against Siam on January 5 last year, accusing him of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk 37.30 lakh between September 3, 2021, and June 30, 2024.
Following an investigation, the ACC submitted a charge sheet to the court on December 30 last year, alleging that Siam possessed movable and immovable assets worth Tk 31.81 lakh inconsistent with his known sources of income.
Siam had served as secretary for relief and disaster management of the Dhaka North unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the banned student wing of the Awami League. He was relieved of the post in July 2024 following allegations of involvement in the PSC question paper leak scandal.
His father, Syed Abed Ali Jibon, also came under the spotlight over the same scandal.
