Owners must install manually made plates to BRTA specifications, the regulatory body said

Motorcycle owners must install and display front number plates by November 15, or face legal action, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has warned.

In a recent public notice, the BRTA said the government had decided to make front registration plates mandatory in addition to the rear plates already required under the Road Transport Act, 2018, and the Road Transport Rules, 2022.

Existing rules require motorcycles to display authority-approved, high-quality retro-reflective registration plates fitted with radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology at the rear.

For now, owners must arrange their own manual front plates in accordance with specifications set by the BRTA.

For scooters, the plates must measure 200mm by 100mm, while those for other motorcycles must measure 285mm by 50mm. In both cases, the letters and numerals must be at least 20mm high.

The plates must be made of stainless steel or aluminium, with the registration number displayed in black Bangla letters and numerals against a white background. No additional slogans or designs are permitted.

For motorcycles other than scooters, the registration number may be displayed on a single horizontal line, such as “Dhaka Metro-L-11-1229”, the notice said.

BRTA urged owners to comply with the requirement by November 15, 2026, warning that failure to do so would invite legal action.
