Police rescue residential students and deploy additional forces amid tension
A madrasa teacher was detained in Pabna over an alleged attempt to molest a student at a residential girls’ madrasa, prompting angry locals to vandalise the institution and set it on fire early Friday.
The incident occurred at Nurani Madrasa in Dorivaudanga village under Varara union of Pabna Sadar upazila.
According to police and local residents, the accused, Md Abu Eusuf Pramanik of Khalishpur village, had been teaching at the madrasa for about five years.
Inspector (Investigation) Sanjoy Kumar Shaha said the teacher allegedly attempted to molest a student on Thursday night. The student managed to escape and informed local residents about the incident.
Enraged locals subsequently stormed the madrasa, caught the teacher and beat him severely. Police rushed to the scene, rescued him from the crowd and took him into custody, Inspector Shaha said.
The madrasa has 60 students, including 30 boarders. Following the incident, police rescued the residential students and handed them over to their parents later that night.
However, tensions escalated further as angry locals vandalised the madrasa building and set it on fire early Friday.
“We are taking steps to initiate legal proceedings against the accused teacher,” Inspector Shaha said.
Police said preparations were under way to file a case in connection with the incident.
The situation in the area remained tense, prompting the deployment of additional police personnel to maintain law and order.
