Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir has said police will not hesitate to take any necessary action if the government approves it, warning that anyone attempting to create instability in the country will face legal action.
He made the remarks on Monday at a ceremony marking the launch of Islamic banking services by Community Bank in the capital’s Chawkbazar area.
The police chief said the police were essential to ensuring a peaceful and secure society, but stressed that freedom did not give anyone the right to do whatever they wanted.
Everyone must abide by the law, he said, urging people not to take the law into their own hands. He also cautioned against routinely holding the police responsible for every incident.
At the event, the IGP alleged that some members of the now-banned Awami League, as well as certain police personnel, were involved in the spread of drugs and drug trafficking in neighbourhoods across the country.
He disclosed that 27 police personnel had been suspended over the past two months.
Asked about former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s possible return to Bangladesh, Fakir said the matter was not the responsibility of the police.
However, he reiterated that the police would take action in accordance with the law against anyone attempting to create unrest or destabilise the country.
