The body of a university student who went missing while bathing in the Jamuna River in Enayetpur, Sirajganj, was recovered on Monday morning, a day after he drowned while visiting the area with friends.
The deceased was identified as Shahriar Nur Hossain Jisan, a student at the Gazipur campus of the National University.
Members of a divers’ team from Rajshahi recovered his body from deep water around 9:30am, approximately 100 metres from the riverbank.
According to police and fire service officials, Jisan and three friends visited the Belkuchi area of Sirajganj on Sunday. After having lunch at Golamer Hotel, they went to the Jamuna River to bathe.
At around 2:30pm, Jisan stepped onto soft sand in the river and suddenly sank beneath the water.
His friend Mahin Hasan tried to rescue him and managed to hold on to him for nearly two minutes. However, Jisan eventually slipped from his grasp and disappeared into the deeper water.
Jisan had remained missing since then.
After receiving the news, members of the Fire Service, Naval Police and Enayetpur Police Station launched a search operation. The search continued until Sunday night, but rescuers failed to locate him.
A divers’ team arriving from Rajshahi recovered his body from deep water on Monday morning.
Mahin Hasan said the four friends had travelled from Dhaka for a trip and decided to bathe in the river after lunch.
“None of us could swim well. We were playing and splashing mud at each other in the river. Jisan stepped onto soft sand and immediately sank. I held on to him for nearly two minutes, but he eventually slipped from my grasp and went into the deeper water. We could not find him after that,” Mahin said.
Officer-in-Charge of Enayetpur Police Station Md Jahid Hossain said a search operation had been underway since Sunday to locate the missing student.
“His body was recovered on Monday morning,” he said.
