BNP lawmaker and Bir Freedom Fighter (FF) Fazlur Rahman has called for an increase in the monthly allowances of Freedom Fighters, saying the government must raise the amount by at least Tk 1 or risk being unable to justify its decision to the nation.
He made the demand while taking part in the general discussion on the proposed budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year in Parliament on Thursday (November 5).
Fazlur Rahman, the BNP lawmaker from Kishoreganj-4, said, “I respect the July uprising. A monthly allowance of Tk 20,000 for the families of those killed in the July uprising is fine. But under no circumstances can the allowances of Freedom Fighters be compared with those of anyone else.”
Addressing BNP lawmakers, he recalled that during the election campaign, they had to identify themselves as members of the party founded by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, whom he described as a martyred freedom fighter, and as supporters of the Liberation War.
“At least 99 per cent of BNP members who contested the election ultimately had to say that we belong to the party of Shaheed Freedom Fighter Ziaur Rahman and that we stand for the Liberation War,” he said.
