Tense from Khagrachhari have spread to Rangamati, resulting in one death and over 50 injuries in sporadic clashes and violence.

Dr Shawkat Akbar Khan, residential medical officer (RMO) of Rangamati Sadar Hospital, confirmed the information, but could not confirm the deceased’s identity.

In an effort to control the situation, the deputy commissioner, Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Khan, announced the imposition of Section 144 in the Rangamati municipal area.

According to local sources, on Friday morning, ethnic minority students held a protest in Rangamati in response to the attacks in Dighinala, Khagrachhari.

As the march reached Banarupa Bazaar, rumours and panic spread throughout the town, causing widespread fear among locals.

During this time, Banarupa Bazaar was attacked and several businesses were set on fire.

Later, army personnel arrived and managed to bring the situation under control. However, tensions remain high in the district town. Joint patrol teams of police, army, and BGB have begun operations to maintain order. The violence has led to a decrease in vehicle movement and public presence in the district town.

Dr Shawkat Akbar Khan stated that a total of 53 individuals have given medical treatment due to the clashes, with 19 being admitted to the hospital.

One unidentified person has died, he added.

Besides, three critically injured people were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

Rangamati’s Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Md Saiful Islam mentioned that the situation is currently under control, with law enforcement agencies actively working in the field.

He confirmed the death of one individual on Friday’s clashes.

Regarding the situation, Rangamati District Commissioner Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Khan stated that unexpected incidents had arisen in Rangamati town since morning, prompting the imposition of Section 144.

This order will remain in effect until further notice, and additional forces from the army, BGB, and police have been deployed in the district town.

Earlier, on Thursday, clashes between two groups in Dighinala led to unrest. Several instances of arson occurred, and at least 60 shops were burned to ashes in Larma Square.
