Twelve leaders of the National Citizen Party, including the chief coordinator of the Bagerhat Sadar Upazila unit, have resigned, citing ideological and political differences with the party’s current course.
The resignations were announced at a press conference at the Bagerhat Press Club on Sunday afternoon, according to a written statement read out at the event.
National Citizen Party Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Chief Coordinator Sheikh Ali Hossain, a retired army member, said he had been serving in the post from 3 June 2025 until Sunday but could no longer continue due to what he described as a clear inconsistency between the party’s founding commitment following the 2024 mass uprising and the present political reality.
“The commitment on which the party was formed to build a new Bangladesh and the dream of a new arrangement has deviated, and my personal philosophy is now in conflict with the political philosophy of the NCP,” he said, announcing his resignation from the post with immediate effect.
He said he would remain engaged in the welfare of the country and the nation for the rest of his life as a former member of the armed forces, but not as a member of the National Citizen Party.
Those who stepped down include Ali Hossain, chief coordinator of the NCP’s Bagerhat Sadar upazila unit; joint coordinator Kazi Mahfuzur Rahman; and members Ashikur Rahman Suman, Sheikh Russell, Sheikh Mizanur Rahman, Md Hasan Sheikh, Md Shahidul Islam, Sheikh Zahidul Islam, Sheikh Nabil Hossain, Md Jony, Munia Akter Jeny and Md Ratul Ahsan.
