Nine years ago, lawyer Fahmida Akhter Mithun was murdered at her home in the capital’s Rampura residential area. The body was found with her hands and feet tied. The investigating officer told the court that the killers could not be identified due to lack of witnesses. The investigators could not find clues to more than 11 sensational murders that took place in the capital. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police has submitted the final report of five of them to the court.

The CID has submitted the final report after failing to unravel the mystery of more than 1,300 murders across the country in 10 years. The CID submitted the final report on the murder of lawyer Fahmida Akhter Mithun on April 26, 2021. The case was investigated by Inspector Nurunnabi.

Miraj Ahmed, the younger brother of renowned composer and lyricist Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul, was murdered on March 9, 2013. His body was recovered from the side of the railway line on Kuril Bishwa Road in Khilkhet. The investigation was given to the DB (Detective Police) to unravel the mystery. Then the investigation was entrusted to the CID.

On August 31, 2015, the then CID inspector Rezaul Karim submitted a final report to the court after not finding any clues. He is currently the Assistant Superintendent of Police.

At that time, he said, “We did not find anything. That is why we submitted a final report. If any clues come out later, the investigation can be started again.”

On May 13, 2015, housewife Sweety Akhter and her maternal uncle Aminul Islam were murdered in their flat in Pallavi. The Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police initially investigated the case. Three years later, the investigation was handed over to the CID.

Unable to find the killers, the agency submitted a final report on January 1 last year. Then the court sent it to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) for re-investigation.

Ratan Krishna Nath, the then CID investigation officer in that case, said that if the police and DB had collected evidence properly during the investigation, the killers could have been found.

PBI’s investigation officer, Police Inspector Abdus Salam, said, “We tried hard to solve the mystery. After finding nothing, the final report was submitted on the advice of senior officials.”

On November 9, 2016, the body of a housewife named Dolly Rani Banik was recovered from inside her house in Madhubagh, Moghbazar. On November 16, a murder case was filed at Ramna Police Station. The police could not solve the mystery after investigating.

On September 24, 2012, 12-year-old schoolgirl Tasnim Rahman Karbi was strangled and killed by slitting her throat at her house in Hazaribagh. After a long investigation, the investigation officer, Police Inspector Mainul Islam of the CID, submitted the final report to the court on April 25 last year.

Karbi’s mother Afroza Farhana Ahmed told this reporter, “The case was in the CID for five years. Everyone was interested in identifying the murderers. Maybe Allah did not leave it in my fate. I believe that Allah will show me justice in some way.”

On August 27, 2014, Maulana Nurul Islam Faruqui, a television religious program presenter, was murdered at his home in East Rajabazar. The investigating officer of the case has been changed at least five times. The CID has not yet been able to unravel the mystery.

On December 21, 2013, six people, including Lutfar Rahman Faruqui, were murdered by slitting their throats at their home in Gopibagh in the capital. A case was filed at Wari Police Station in this incident. The investigation into that case has not been completed even after almost 11 years.

On November 20, 2018, the body of Abu Bakar Abu, a BNP candidate for the Jessore-6 (Keshabpur) constituency in the 11th National Parliament election, was found in the Buriganga River in the capital.

On the night of November 22, his nephew Humayun Kabir identified the body after seeing it on the Facebook page of Keraniganj Police Station. The investigation agency has not yet been able to find any clues to Abu’s murder. PBI’s Dhaka and Jessore districts are working to solve the murder mystery.
