As many as 132 people were killed across the country in eight days during the Eid-ul-Fitr vacation, with 24 casualties recorded on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr.
The statistics was published by Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), the government’s regulatory body for the transportation sector, on its website on a daily basis. The data for April 5 was not yet published.
The data prepared by BRTA’s Road Safety wing shows 110 road accidents took place between March 28 and April 4 in eight divisions. Alongside the deaths, 208 people were injured in these accidents.
According to the statistics, of the eight days, 19 people were killed in 17 road accidents on April 1, the day after Eid.
Before Eid, 12 people were killed in 12 incidents on March 28, while 13 were killed in 12 incidents on March 29, and 16 were killed in another 12 road accidents on March 30.
After the Eid, 22 people were killed in 12 incidents of accidents on April 2 while 12 more were killed in 11 accidents on April 3, and 14 were killed in 16 accidents on April 4.
This year, Eid was celebrated on March 31 across the country, with a five-day public holiday declared by the government on the occasion of the biggest religious festival observed from March 29 to April 2.
In addition, the government declared April 3 as a public holiday, which was followed by two weekly holidays on April 4 and 5.
As a result, the country experienced nine consecutive days of vacation marking Eid, with government offices resuming activities from today.
DIVISION-WISE ACCIDENTS
Out of the eight divisions, 32 people were killed and 89 injured in 27 incidents of road accidents in Dhaka.
In Chattogram division, 31 people were killed in 17 road accidents with another 51 people injured.
Of the accidents, at least 10 people were killed and two others injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a microbus on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Lohagara upazila of Chattogram on April 2.
The BRTA data shows that 14 accidents left as many people killed and 15 injured in Rajshahi division, 19 accidents left 23 people killed and another 23 injured in Khulna division, and 10 people were killed and another seven injured in seven road accidents in Mymensingh division.
In Rangpur division, 14 road accidents claimed lives of 11 people and left another 18 injured.
On the other hand, seven accidents caused six people to be killed and another 10 to be injured in Barishal division, while five road accidents killed five in Sylhet division.
The BRTA said each day’s report was prepared based on incidents occurred between 12:01am of one day and 12:00am of the next day.
