14 fishermen send to jail in Sirajganj for netting Hilsha despite ban

A mobile court in Belkuchi of Sirajganj district sentenced 14 fishermen to 14 days imprisonment for netting Hilsa fish from different points of Jamuna river despite the ban issued by the government.

During the period, the mobile court also recovered about 30 kg of mother Hilsha fish and 2 lakh meters of illegal current nets from the possession of convicted.

Afiya Sultana Keya, UNO of Belkuchi upazila delivered the verdict by sitting an instant court and sent those to district prison.

It was learnt that, fishermen have been netting Hilsha fish from different parts of Jamuna river regularly despite the government ban. On the basis of news, drive was conducted at some points of the Jamuna river and the fishermen were nabbed. During the period, the law enforcers seized 30 kg of mother Hilsha and 2 lakh meters of illegal current nets. Later, the current nets were damaged by burning and fishes were distributed among the local orphanages and madrashas.
