The District and Sessions Judge Court here on Thursday sent 17 Awami League (AL) leaders including former chairman of Lalpur upazila parishad to jail in connection with a case lodged under anti-terrorism act.
A total of 19 leaders and activists of AL led by former upazila chairman Ishaq Ali, also the organizing secretary of Natore district AL, surrendered before the court of District and Sessions Judge Sheikh Md Nasirul Haque and prayed for granting bail.
The court after hearing both the sides, granted bail to two of them and ordered to send the remaining 17 people to jail rejecting their bail petitions.
Inspector of Natore Court Md Mostafa Kamal said the AL leaders obtained ad-interim bail from the High Court and surrendered to the Judge Court following a high court directive.
The prominent leaders who were sent to jail are – Ishaq Ali, president of Lalpur Upazila AL Aftab Hossain Zulfu, Chairman of Lalpur Sadar union Abu Bakar Siddque Polash and general secretary of Lalpur Upazila Juba League Khalid Hossain.
A case was filed with Lalpur Thana following a deadly clash between the leaders and activists of AL and BNP on March 31 when the AL leaders and workers chanted ‘Joy Bangla’ slogan after coming out from an Eid jamaat at Balitita Eidgah Maidan of the upazila.
