Two police personnel have been temporarily suspended over the death of student Abu Sayed during the quota reform protest in Rangpur.

ASI Amir Hossain and Constable Sujan Chandra Ray have been suspended over the death of the Begum Rokeya University student, says Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Moniruzzaman.

“They were suspended on Aug 1 based on the report from the investigation committee.”

Maruf Hossain, deputy commissioner of Rangpur police, said: “Once the full investigation report is available, action will be taken against them.”

On Jul 16, students protesting as part of the quota reform movement marched from the district school intersection to the Lalbagh Farm intersection and met with another group of protesters.

The protesters then attempted to march inside the Rokeya University campus through gate no. 1.

The police and the Chhatra League clashed with protesters at the time and Abu Sayed, several other students, and police were injured.

Abu Sayed, who was shot, died before he reached the hospital, doctors said.

The 25-year-old Abu Sayed was a student of the Department of English at Rokeya University. He was the youngest son of Mokbul Hossain from Babanpur village in Pirganj’s Madankhali.

His classmates say he was a coordinator of the quota reform protests at the university.
