PM directive prompts public hearings to select new names reflecting local heritage
Bogura Correspondent
Three separate committees have been formed to rename three unions in Bogura’s Shibganj and Mokamtala upazilas, following a directive from the prime minister.
Shibganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ziaur Rahman confirmed the development to the journalists, saying the committees were constituted after the Prime Minister’s Office instructed Bogura Deputy Commissioner Toufiqur Rahman to take necessary measures.
The directive requested that the names of Mirbari union under Shibganj upazila and Simanta and Diganta unions under Mokamtala upazila be changed to reflect local history, heritage, or other universally acceptable identities.
Deputy Commissioner Toufiqur said he had instructed the UNO to organise public hearings involving all stakeholders, including journalists, to finalise the new names.
A subsequent letter from the Local Government Division in Bogura, signed by Deputy Director Razia Sultana, formally directed the UNO to act.
In response, three committees were formed. The Mirbari union renaming committee is headed by Shibganj Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdul Hannan; the Simanta union renaming committee is led by Upazila Livestock Officer Mahbub Hasan Chowdhury; and the Diganta union renaming committee is chaired by Rural Upazila Development Officer Al Mamun. Each committee consists of three members.
Abdul Hannan told the journalists that public hearings will be held at three different locations at 10:00am tomorrow to select new names, with announcements being made via loudspeakers in the respective areas.
