A court in Sirajganj sentenced three persons to death for killing two brothers in Chowhali of Sirajganj district centering a dispute over construction of a drain to irrigate in the cropland.

The court also fined Tk 10,000 each of the convicted, in default; they will have to suffer in jail for one more month.

The convicted are: Nasir Uddin, 40, son of Abdur Rashid Master of Char Kodalia Uttarpara village in Chowhali upazila, his elder brother Shahidul Islam Sachcha, 50, and Israfil Hossain, 65, son of Shamsher Ali of the same village.

Senior District and Session Judge M Ali Ahmed delivered the verdict on Monday.

According to the prosecution brief, the convicted attacked the victims–Kawsar Ali and his brother Milton Ali– over a dispute relating to set up a drain for irrigating the land on December 7, 2018, when they went to visit their relatives’ house in Kodalia village. Due to the attack, they received serious injuries. The both were taken to Tangail General Hospital, where the physicians referred them to Dhaka as their condition deteriorated further.

Of them, Kawsar succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital, and Milton died while undergoing treatment.

The victim’s mother Hayatun Nesa filed a murder case following the incident. The court found the three guilty and sentenced them to death.
