Three individuals were reportedly shot dead at Habiganj’s Baniachang upazila during a violent clash between police and protesters on Monday.

The clash ensued between the protesters and police personnel when the law enforcers attempted to stop them near Eidgah area.

Habiganj District’s Civil Surgeon Dr. Nurul Haque confirmed the report, adding, “Three people died from gunshot wounds while undergoing treatment at Baniachong Upazila Health Complex.”

At least 50 people, including several police officials, were also injured during the clash.

Though the identities of the deceased could not be ascertained immediately, it was confirmed that the deads included two young men, aged between 18 to 20, and one middle-aged man.

Sources reported that protesters started marching towards Habiganj Police Station around 11.30am on Monday.

Protesters hurled bricks and stones at the police, provoking the police to respond with rubber bullets, tear gas, and sound grenades.

As the police retreated, protesters attacked the police station, eventually setting it on fire.
