In Jamalpur’s Dewanganj, third gender candidate Munni Akter has won the post of vice chairman in the upazila parishad election.
Munni was elected by getting 23,768 votes in the second phase of the Sixth Upazila Parishad election held on Tuesday (May 21). Five women candidates were defeated by Munni by huge margins. Munni Akter won by 23768 votes with sewing machine symbol.
Munni’s nearest rival Majeda Begum got 21,184 votes, Mira Akter got 14,223 votes, Maryam Begum 21,184 votes. Rashida Begum 4,323 votes, Rokshana Akter 3411 votes. Five women candidates lost with huge votes in competition with the third gender candidate.
After winning the election, Munni Akter said, “I have always been working on the side of the people. Now the people have given me the opportunity to do a bigger job. I will remove discrimination from the society and work for the development of the area on the side of the poor and hardworking people.”
This is the first time Munni Akter has been elected as the third gender person in Dewanganj as the female vice chairman.
