Four members of a same family, including two children, were killed in a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Sylhet’s Golapganj upazila early Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Riyaz Uddin, 50, his wife Rahima Begum, their daughter Samia Khatun, 15, and son Abbas Uddin, 13.
According to locals, the incident occurred around 2:00 AM at Bakhtiarghat area under Lakshanabandh union, when a portion of a hill collapsed onto a house situated at its base, burying its sleeping residents under debris.
They also reported hearing screams in the middle of the night and attempted to remove the soil themselves but were unable to reach the victims in time.
Golapganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Foysal Mahmud Fuad confirmed the fatalities and said the bodies were recovered around 8:30 AM Sunday by rescue teams comprising fire service personnel, the army, and local administration.
Golapganj Police officer-in-charge (OC) Moniruzzaman Molla stated, “The house was located at the foot of a hill. Due to continuous rain, a landslide occurred, burying the family. All four bodies have been recovered. They are now being sent for autopsy.”
