At least 40 people have been killed extrajudicially since the interim government took office 14 months ago, according to a new report by the human rights organisation Odhikar.

The incidents occurred between 9 August 2024 and 30 September 2025, with 11 killings recorded in the last three months alone—from July to September this year.

The findings were published in Odhikar’s latest human rights report released on 30 October. The organisation said the report was compiled by analysing data from various rights groups and reports published in the national media.

The Awami League government was ousted on 5 August 2024 following a mass uprising. Three days later, on 8 August, the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus assumed responsibility.

According to Odhikar, of the 40 extrajudicial killings recorded during the 14-month period, 19 people were shot dead, 14 were tortured to death, and seven died in custody after being beaten. During the July–September quarter alone, seven of the victims were allegedly killed by members of joint forces, three by police, and one by army personnel.

The report also stated that at least 27 inmates died in prison during this period, bringing the total number of custodial deaths under the interim government to 88.

Between August 2024 and September 2025, at least 35 Bangladeshis were killed in shootings by India’s Border Security Force (BSF), the report said. Ten of those deaths occurred between July and September this year. It also claimed that since May, Indian authorities have pushed back at least 2,333 Bangladeshis through various border points.

Odhikar further reported that 46 people were killed in incidents of political violence between July and September, bringing the total number of such deaths during the 13 months of the interim government to 281.

In the same period, 687 women and girls were reportedly subjected to rape, 188 of which took place between July and September.

The report also documented 153 incidents of mob killings during the interim government’s tenure, with 45 of those occurring in the most recent quarter.
