A Naogaon court has sentenced five individuals to life imprisonment for the murder of battery-run auto-rickshaw driver Bhajan Debnath Sajal.
The court also fined each of the convicts Tk 5,000, in default of which they will have to serve an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.
The verdict was delivered on Wednesday (August 27) by Judge Md. Kaisarul Islam of Naogaon’s Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-4.
The information was confirmed by Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Monsur Ali, who represented the state in the case.
The convicts are: Md. Jewel and Zaher Ali, from Arji Naoga Mandal Para area; Suruj Mia, from Arji Naoga Uttarpara; Raton Mandal, from Chakprasad area; Saiful Islam, from Uttarpara Paba Mosque area; and Abdur Rashid, from Khanpur in Dupchanchia upazila of Bogura. Among them, Zaher Ali remains absconding.
According to court documents, Bhajan Debnath Sajal left home with his own battery-run auto-rickshaw for regular passenger trips on the evening of November 16, 2019. He never returned home that night. The following morning, on November 17, police recovered his body from a muddy waterbody filled with water hyacinths near a paved road in Gutiar Beel of Hansaigari area in Naogaon Sadar upazila.
Following this, the victim’s father, Bhupendranath Debnath, filed a murder case with Naogaon Sadar Police Station. After a prolonged trial, including witness testimonies, the court delivered its verdict.
