A court in Sirajganj on Sunday sentenced six persons to life term imprisonment in a case filed for killing Habibur Rahman Habi of Patgram village in Kazipur upazila of the district in 2014.

The court also fined Tk 5,000 each, in default, they will have to suffer two more months in jail.

Ms. Quaniz Fatima, Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 in Sirajganj handed down the verdict.

Additional PP Advocate Golam Sarwar Khan Nabab and Peshkar (clerk) Mohammad Ali of the court confirmed this information and told The Daily Sky that, the court has sentenced six persons out of seven accused in the case to life term imprisonment and acquitted one, as the allegation brought against him could not be proved.

The convicted are: Juran Sheikh, son of late Pocha Sheikh, Nazrul Islam, son of late Sona Mallik, Kuran Khan, son of late Asim Khan, Fulmala, wife of Shah Ali, Lovely Khatun, wife of Juran Sheikh and their son Amir Hossain of the Patgram village in the upazila.

According to the prosecution brief, Habibur Rahman (the deceased) used to take dinner every night at his daughter’s house nearby his resident after death of his wife. On the night of occurrence on September 30, 2014, after taking dinner like other nights, Habibur Rahman returned to his house with his grandson Mehedi Hasan Shuvo and slept in a separate room.

In the morning, grandson Shuvo woke up and started searching his grandfather as he did not see him. Later, when he informed the matter to his mother, they also joined in searching.

At one stage, on the afternoon of October 2, 2014, the locals found his body in the water in the low-lying cropland near the house and informed the police. The police reached the spot and recovered his body.

Later, the family of the deceased came to know that Habibur Rahman used to secretly visit the house of his neighbor Fulmala Khatun. The people around suspected this movement and sometimes criticized him. Centering the incident, the accused, including Fulmala Khatun, strangled Habibur and left his body in the neighboring field. In this incident, the victim’s son Abul Kalam Azad filed a case with Kazipur Police Station accusing five persons including Fulmala.

After investigating the case, the police submitted a charge sheet against seven people in the court on January 27, 2015. During the course of the case, the court recorded the testimony of 20 people. After a long testimony, the court sentenced six persons to life term imprisonment.
