7 arrested in Tangail for armed robbery

Detective Branch (DB) of Police has apprehended seven members of an inter-district robbery gang responsible for a violent heist in Ghatail, Tangail, where a crude bomb was detonated at a residence during the incident.

The arrested individuals include Md Sohag Mondol, 41, Mintu, 38, Mosharraf, 37, Jasim, 33, Aminul, 36, Anwar, 38, and Maynal, 35.

During the arrests, police recovered 5 rati (approximately 0.97 grams) of gold, 34 bhari (around 39.64 grams) of silver, and one mobile phone from their possession.

At a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Tangail Superintendent of Police (SP) Mizanur Rahman confirmed the arrests. He revealed that the incident occurred in the early hours of August 18, when members of an armed robbery gang forcibly entered the home of Amar Banik in Chokpakuitia village, Ghatail, using locally-made weapons.

The robbers threatened the family with death and stole cash, gold ornaments, silver jewelry, and mobile phones, amounting to assets worth Tk 6,41,800. In a bid to create panic and escape undetected, they detonated a crude bomb (potka) before fleeing the scene.

Following the robbery, the DB police initiated an investigation, employing information technology and intelligence sources. On August 24, they arrested Sohag Mondol from the Shafipur area of Kaliakair upazila, Gazipur. Sohag later gave a confessional statement before the court under Section 164.

SP Mizanur Rahman further said that Sohag admitted to his involvement during interrogation. With information provided by him and other sources, the police traced and arrested the gang’s mastermind, Mintu, from Kendua, Netrokona. Additional suspects were subsequentl.
