A special drive against illegal fishing in Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj district led to seizure of 12,000 meters of illegal fishing nets and the arrest of seven individuals.
Following a mobile court hearing, six offenders were sentenced to 14 days of imprisonment, while one was fined Tk 2,000.
The operation was conducted on Saturday morning (October 11, 2025), under the leadership of Afreen Jahan, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Belkuchi.

Upazila Fisheries Officer Al-Masud and a team from the fisheries department also participated in the drive.
During the operation, 25 kilograms of Jatka fish were recovered and later distributed among three Hafizia madrasas as part of a social responsibility initiative.
Upazila Fisheries Officer Al-Masud stated that, “The Hilsa conservation campaign is ongoing. Regular drives are being conducted to prevent illegal fishing during the ban period.”
Meanwhile, the upazila administration reaffirmed its commitment to continue such operations to protect mother Hilsa and ensure sustainable fish resources.
