Cox’s Bazar Correspondent:
Continuous heavy rainfall has flooded at least 70 villages in the Ukhiya and Teknaf upazilas in Cox’s Bazar, trapping around 60,000 families in water.
Local officials confirmed that 20 villages in Ukhiya and 50 in Teknaf have been impacted. Waterlogging has also been reported in three Rohingya camps in Ukhiya.
Md. Abdul Hannan, Assistant Meteorologist at the Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office, stated that 226 mm of rain fell over 30 hours on Monday. Heavy rain is expected to last for several more days.
Teknaf officials reported that about 50 villages are underwater, affecting more than 50,000 families. In Hnila Union, 12 villages, including Jaliapara, Fulerdail, and Rangikhali, remain flooded, disrupting roads and communication. Areas like Collegepara and Shilbunia in Teknaf municipality are also submerged, with some schools affected.
Teknaf Sadar Union Chairman Ziaur Rahman identified six flooded villages. Shahporir Island in Sabrang Union and several villages in Whykong Union are experiencing problems as well.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sheikh Ehshan Uddin mentioned that evacuation orders have been issued for vulnerable areas, and shelters are ready for displaced residents.
Ukhiya has suffered severe damage to farms, seedbeds, and betel leaf fields, with over 20 villages flooded and many rural roads unusable. Local officials are working to clear drains and speed up water drainage.
Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer Mustak Ahmed reported a significant loss to Aman seedbeds in several unions, including Haldia Palong and Ratnapalong.
A fallen tree on the Thaingkhali to Mosarkhola road has disrupted power, internet, and transportation services in parts of Ukhiya.
Local authorities are compiling lists of the affected areas. Additionally, three Rohingya camps in Kutupalong are dealing with waterlogging, according to community representatives.
