Police in a drive on Wednesday night recovered 75 cartons of Indian cotton weight at around 110 pounds and worth at around Tk 15 lakh from Subornasara area in Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj district.
During the drive, police also seized the covered-van used in the carrying of illegal goods.
But, police failed to nab anyone involved with the activities.
Quoting locals, police said, a section of businessmen had been involved with supplying various brand of cottons to the handloom rich Belkuchi area for long after importing from India on the VAT exemption facilities and amassing crore of Taka. As a result, the government had been deprived of revenue earning, Abdul Barik, Inspector (Investigation) of Belkuchi police station said.
