In an unprecedented move, the Indian government has removed Border Security Force (BSF) Director General (DG) Nitin Agrawal and his deputy Special DG (West) Y B Khurania, sending the two senior police officers back to their respective state cadres with immediate effect.

The move came amid a spike in terror incidents and infiltration attempts in the Jammu region bordering Pakistan. The terror incidents left 22 people dead in recent weeks.

While Agarwal was repatriated to his parent cadre in Kerala state with immediate effect, Khurania has been sent back to Odisha state cadre.

A 1989 batch Indian Police Service officer, Agrawal had taken charge as BSF DG in June last year and he was scheduled to retire in July, 2026.

Khurania belonging to 1990 IPS batch as Special DG (West) headed the formation of BSF along the Pakistan border that runs for about 2,289 kms along Jammu, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat in India’s western flank. The BSF guards India’s border with Bangladesh and Pakistan.
