13 cops among 22 killed in Sirajganj

At least 22 persons including 13 cops and a journalist were killed and 100 others injured in sporadic clashes in Sirajganj district during the non-cooperation movement on Sunday.

Of them, 13 police personnel were killed by mass-beating and three others were shot to death in Enayetpur police station when the protesters made attack on the police station during their demonstrations.

Police hurled tear gas shells and rubber bullets to resist them that left three persons dead on the spot. In the incident, over 50 persons were also injured.

The matter of killing 13 cops at Enayetpur police station was confirmed by a media brief of police headquarters through whatsapp group massage.

The deceased demonstrators were identified as Shihab Uddin, a college student of Betil village, Siam and Mohammad Yahia of Khukni village under the Enayetpur police station.  Administrative Officer of Khaza Yunus Ali Medical College and Hospital Kowshik Ahmed confirmed the matter of the demonstrators’ death.

But, no responsible officer of the police department or concerned administration could confirm the matter of three persons’ death until filing the report on Sunday evening.

On the other hand, six persons including a journalist were killed and 50 others injured in Raiganj upazila of the district in the violence. The demonstrators entered into the local Awami League office and attacked on its leaders and activists leaving four persons dead. Besides, the demonstrators attacked journalists storming into the local press club that claimed the life of a journalist. The deceased were identified as journalist Prodip Kumar Bhowmik, 50, Raiganj Upazila Correspondent of The Daily Khaborpatra, Golam Sorowar Liton, 55, Chairman of Bramhagachha Union Parishad, his brother Golam Hasnat Tito, 40, Mehedi Hasan Ilias, 40, President of Swechhasebok League’s Raiganj upazila unit, Al-Amin Hossain, 37, General Secretary of the upazila AL and its former General Secretary Jahangir Alam, 40.

Nahid Hasan Khan, UNO of Raiganj Upazila confirmed the matter of six persons dead to the media.

Besides, it was reported that, the demonstrators torched Hatikumrul Police Station and a number of vehicles including trucks and buses by setting those on fire. Not only that, Deputy Commissioner (DC) office and other important installations including traffic police boxes were also vandalized and ransacked by the demonstrators. More reports of clashes were also received from Ullapara and Shahzadpur in the district. Tense situation was prevailing across the district.
