The public holiday on August 15, observed as National Mourning Day, is likely to be canceled, according to sources from the Ministry of Public Administration.

The sources stated that a notification to revoke the holiday is ready and could be issued as early as Tuesday (August 13), pending approval from senior officials.

“If not issued on Tuesday, the notification will be released the following day,” the sources added.

Earlier on Tuesday, Home Advisor of the interim government Brigadier General (Retd.) M. Sakhawat Hossain said that discussions regarding the holiday would take place later in the afternoon. The decision is expected to be finalized during these discussions.

He also told that there would be a strong police presence on August 15 to ensure security and prevent any disturbances. “We will take all necessary security measures. Police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) will be deployed, and the army may also be deployed,” he added.

Earlier on Monday, several leaders of different political parties, including BNP held a meeting with Dr Mohammad Yunus, chief of the interim government, and placed their opinions to cancel the public holiday.
