More than 18,000 people were injured and treated in hospitals after being caught up in the violence during the July-August student-led uprising across the country

This information was revealed in a draft report submitted by a government committee to the Ministry of Health on Thursday.

The Management Information System (MIS) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) is compiling a list of the injured and deceased from the movement that led to the ousting of the autocratic government of Sheikh Hasina, according to sources within the health directorate and ministry.

The report also indicated that 622 people have been confirmed dead in the clashes and violence recorded in hospitals during the uprising. However, many of those who died were not taken to hospital, suggesting that the actual death toll is significantly higher.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare noted that this is a draft report, with more data to be collected for the final list. A process of data correction is underway, and the final list will be published on the government website, which may include additional names and a revised death toll.

According to the government, 18,247 people have been injured in the uprising so far. Among the eight divisions, Dhaka Division had the highest number of casualties, with 11,073 injured. The fewest injuries were recorded in Barisal Division, with 236.

Following Dhaka, Chattogram Division had the next highest number of injuries, with 1,738, while Khulna Division reported 1,546. Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions recorded 1,205 and 1,154 injuries, respectively. Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions reported 718 and 577 injuries, respectively.

Of those injured, 10,939 received treatment in the outpatient departments of hospitals, while 6,865 were treated as inpatients.

A total of 15,689 injured people sought treatment in government hospitals, while 2,558 were treated in private hospitals. A large number of injured individuals are still receiving care in hospitals and at their homes across the country.

However, none of the districts in Barisal, Khulna, Mymensingh, and Rangpur divisions have reported any patients receiving treatment in private hospitals or clinics, and no formal notification has been given to the government regarding this issue.

The list of fatalities reveals that deaths occurred in all divisions of the country during the uprising, with the highest number recorded in Dhaka Division, where 477 deaths were reported.

Barisal Division had the lowest number of deaths, with just one, while Chattogram and Khulna divisions reported 43 and 39 deaths, respectively. In Sylhet, Rajshahi, and Mymensingh divisions, 22, 19, and 17 deaths were reported, respectively.

The first death of the movement occurred in Rangpur, where university student Aby Sayeed was killed in police firing. Four others died in subsequent violence in the division.
