26 more Bangladeshis who were pardoned in the Emirates have returned home. With this, 42 people returned to the country from the UAE in two phases.
The pardoned Bangladeshis returned home from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by India’s Indigo Airlines on Friday (September 13) afternoon.
The Emirates government has pardoned 57 Bangladeshis who were punished for protesting in the UAE in solidarity with the anti-discrimination student movement in Bangladesh. Among them, 14 people came home on Saturday (September 7) in the first phase.
On September 3, UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan pardoned 57 expatriate Bangladeshis who were sentenced to different terms. The notification sent by the Office of the Chief Adviser on that day said, “57 Bangladeshis who were previously convicted by the Federal Court of the United Arab Emirates have been pardoned by the President of the Emirates, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. They will be sent to Bangladesh soon.”
UAE-based Gulf News reported that the Attorney General Chancellor Dr. Hamad Al Shamsi issued an order to stop the execution of the sentence and start the deportation process. The Attorney General called on all UAE residents to respect the country’s laws, stressing that the right to express opinions is protected by the state and its legal framework.
Mentioned that on July 20, expatriate Bangladeshis protested in the United Arab Emirates. After that, 57 Bangladeshis were arrested by the country’s law enforcement forces. After the trial, some of these expatriates were sentenced to 10 years, some 11 years, and some even life imprisonment. After that, the country also stopped the visa facility for Bangladeshis for an indefinite period.
